Make next year the 'Year of Learning'

There's one sure way to survive and even thrive next year, and that is to continue developing an inventory of your skills. The end of the year is a good time to take stock of your current skills inventory and set challenging learning goals for the New Year. We live in an "age of talent" and it's up to you to make sure you have the skills to communicate effectively, cooperate constructively and operate competently. Here's how to build your inventory of skills:

1. Build a strong foundation
Your essential management skills are more important than ever. Make sure you have a solid foundation of skills such as time management, work/life balance, decision making, planning, interpersonal communication and that you can put these skills to use using today's technology.

2. Take a regular inventory
This year, evaluate the skills you already have, and determine the ones you need to acquire. Develop a learning plan to gain the skills you lack.

3. Add 'Learning' to your skills
Make a commitment to becoming a life-long learner. This is the best way to keep abreast of change.

4. Be flexible
Work continues to be increasingly interdependent and have global reach. To succeed in an environment of team and project work, you have to be comfortable working in a variety of situations.

Today's job consists not only of doing it, but also thinking about it. Each of us is now responsible for our own career development. Don't wait for someone else in your organization to take the lead in your personal development - do it yourself!

By constantly adding to your inventory of skills, you will enhance your personal productivity, your professional development, and add value to your organization.
