From Overwhelmed to Empowered: A Workplace Transformation Case Study

WorkingSm@rt Training Helped Restore Control, Reduce Stress, and Improve Productivity

Macmillan Cancer Support is a leading UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by cancer. Since

1911, the organization has provided vital emotional, practical, and financial support to individuals and families, while also advocating for better cancer care and awareness.

With such a critical mission, staff were managing a high volume of responsibilities, but many began to feel overwhelmed by their day-to-day workload.  Internal feedback revealed that employees lacked the time and structure needed to effectively carry out their roles, leading to increased stress and reduced efficiency.

Having already seen success from earlier training initiatives, leadership made the decision to expand Priority Management training across the organization to help teams regain control, improve organization, and work more effectively.

Training Approach

Priority Management partenered with Macmillan to deliver a program designed to reduce workload pressure and build sustainable productivity habits across teams.

Built Around Real Work Challenges

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, the training was grounded in the realities of the Macmillan's day-to-day operations. Early conversations identified key friction points, particularly around delegation, task visibility, and communication, which were then directly addressed through the program.

Establishing a Common Way of Working

One of the biggest barriers to efficiency was inconsistency in how digital tools were being used across teams. The training introduces a shared set of practices for managing tasks, communication, and collaboration within Microsoft 365, helping to create greater alignment and reduce confusion.

Unlocking Underused Tools

Many employees were only scratching the surface of what their tools could do. The program highlighted practical ways to use Microsoft applications, particularly Outlook and Teams, to better manage priorities, coordinate work, and support hybrid collaboration.

Reinforcement Beyond the Classroom

To ensure meaningful change, support didn't stop when the sessions ended. Ongoing follow-up helped teams apply what they learned in real scenarios, strengthening adoption and embedding new ways of working into daily routines.

Training Results

The impact of the training was immediate and deeply felt across the organization.

Digital tools like Microsoft 365 can either contribute to workplace overwhelm or serve as powerful enablers of clarity and control. For Macmillan, the shift came from not just learning features, but changing how work itself was approached.

Teams began to manage workloads more effectively, communicate more clearly, and collaborate with greater ease, leading to a noticeable reduction in stress and a stronger sense of control.
